1,094,429. Zone-melting. SIEMENS A.G. Nov. 21, 1966 [Nov. 30, 1965; June 3, 1966], No. 52115/66. Heading B1S. Lateral shift means mounted at one or both ends of an apparatus for zone-melting a silicon rod in a controlled atmosphere (in accordance with Specification 1,044,592) comprises a rotary cylinder mounted in a bearing block and a rotary shaft mounted eccentrically in the rotary cylinder and carrying a rod holder at one end and a fly-wheel mass at the other end. In one embodiment (Fig. 1), a rotary shaft 7 is mounted eccentrically in a rotary cylinder 3 which is mounted eccentrically in a bearing block 4 which is attached to the base 2 of the zone-melting chamber and is surrounded by a water-cooling coil 14. The cylinder may rotate a limited distance or continuously. In another embodiment (Figs. 2-4), an internally watercooled rotary shaft (27) is mounted eccentrically in a rotary cylinder (26) which is mounted eccentrically in a rotary block (25) which is mounted axially in a bearing block (24). The rotary block is rotated through a limited distance (Fig. 3), whereafter the rotary cylinder is rotated continuously (Fig. 4). |
