A tobacco-smoke filter comprises a bundle of continuous filaments carrying thereon a bonding agent that is an acetoacetic acid ester of a mono- or polyalkylene glycol and a wrapper, e.g. of paper, around the bundle. The filaments may be of cellulose diacetate or triacetate, and may be crimped. The ester may be the di- or tri-ester of glycerol or the di-ester of mono-, di-, tri-, tetra-, penta- or hexaethylene or - propylene glycol. The bonding agent may be applied to the tow while it is spread out to form a band, immediately before it is compacted into rod-like form. The rod will then become rigid at room temperatures.ALSO:A tow for making tobacco-smoke filters comprises filaments bonded together at random points by a bonding agent that is an acetoacetic acid ester of glycerol or of a mono- or poly-alkylene glycol. The filaments may be of cellulose diacetate or triacetate, and may be crimped. The ester may be the di- or tri-ester of glycerol or the di-ester of mono-, di-, tri-, tetra-, penta- or hexa-ethylene or - propylene glycol, and may be made by the reaction of diketene with the corresponding glycol or glycerol in the presence of a tertiary amine catalyst. The bonding agent may be applied to the tow by spraying or by the wiping action of a wick applicator while it is spread out to form a band, immediately before it is compacted into rod-like form. The rod will then become rigid at room temperatures. |
