PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means to achieve heavy EGR during stratified charge combustion as distribution ability to EGR gas to respective cylinders is maintained, and improve combustion stability during the stratified charge combustion. SOLUTION: In a cylinder injection type engine E, intake control valves 14 closed during stratified charge combustion are arranged at the second intake ports 4 of cylinders #1-#4, and an EGR opening part 23 is formed in the port situated downstream from the intake control valve 14 of the second intake port 4. During the stratified charge combustion, EGR gas is fed to an intake system through the EGR opening part 23. Since EGR gas is individually fed to the cylinders #1-#4, distribution ability for EGR gas is improved. Further, since EGR gas is not cooled by a surge tank 13 or the like, hot EGR gas is feedable from a time when the stratified charge combustion is started, the combustion stability is improved, and heavy EGR is achieved.
