In a process of producing a porous sintered bearing a metal powder mixture comprising copper and not greater than 43% of lead is distributed on a support such as steel and sintered at 882-954 DEG C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere containing not more than 0.1% carbon dioxide and having a dew point of less than 5.5 DEG C. The mixture may also contain up to 2% by weight of the copper of metals such as tin, antimony and zinc and the powder mixture should be finer than 100 mesh or 130 mesh. Sintering is carried out in hydrogen, cracked ammonia or a methane atmosphere. The steel backing may first be coated with copper and the sintered bearing may be plated with tin or indium or hot dipped in tin, indium, antimony or alloys of these with lead. Alternatively, the powder mixture may be sintered on a non-adhering surface such as oxidized chrome steel or graphite to form a self-supporting porous bearing. |
