A thread is rolled on a workpiece W by means of two rolls 1 and 2 which initially rotate at the same speed, one of the rolls then being rotated slightly faster than the other in order to draw the workpiece through the narrowest gap between the rolls, and the difference in speeds then being removed. One roll is axially movable against spring pressure to permit its profile to mate with that formed on the workpiece by the other roll during speed changes in the rolls. The rolls are rotated by means of toothed worms 5 and 6, the worm 6 being axially movable by means of a lever 13 to vary the speed of rotation of the roll 2 relative to that of roll 1. The lever 13, and also a workpiece feeding bar 3<SP>1</SP>, are driven in synchronism by cranks 12 and 10 from a common rotating wheel 7a. The feeding movements performed by the bar and the roll 2 can readily be adjusted by altering the position or lengths of the cranks. The mechanism for varying the speed of roll 2 may embody epicyclic gearing or synchronously driven cams.</p> |
