PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the generation of a phase difference and to suppress variation in chromaticity due to variation in cut wavelength with an angle of incidence by making use of the decomposition and composition of light in high-precision plane by a polarization beam splitter. SOLUTION: The P-polarized light transmitted through a 2nd polarization beam splitter 4 is modulated by λ/4 phase difference plates 50, 52, 60, and 62 into circular polarized light, which is made incident on dichroic filters 51 and 61 reflecting only specific wavelength. The reflected light is modulated again by λ/4 phase difference plates 50, 52, 60, and 62 into S-polarized light and then reflected again by the 2nd polarization beam splitter 4, which is utilized for the decomposition and composition of colors. The P-polarized light which is transmitted through a UV-IR cut filter 21 from the direction of the light source part 2 is transmitted through a 1st beam splitter 3 and made incident on the 2nd beam splitter as luminous flux of visible light of P-polarized light, and pieces of luminous flux of image-modulated S-polarized light of B, G, and R which are projected are made incident on the beam splitter 3, reflected toward a projection lens 8, and enlarged and projected on a screen. |
