Molten metals and alloys continuously cast into an ingot mould (22) using the "Hot Top" technique are solidified by applying an electromagnetic field, produced from a current having a specific frequency, to a resonant cavity (10), to produce resonance in a molten metal or alloy held in the cavity. The field is created by an alternating current flowing through an electromagnetic conduction pump (2) and the resonance obtained by adjusting the frequency of the current. Also claimed are other processes, that produce vibrations and cavitation in a molten metal in a resonant cavity, that can be a magnetohydrodynamic or Helmholtz resonator.
