[Also in Group XL (c)] The electrode of an endo-sonde battery liable to evolve hydrogen has a small percentage of one or more substances added thereto and is pretreated in an electrolyte to reduce subsequent gas evolution when assembled in the battery. For example, using a battery electrolyte of sodium-chloride the electrode 4 may be of silverchloride and the hydrogen evolving electrode 3, normally of magnesium, may be alloyed with 1.5% manganese although other additives such as aluminium or a combination of materials may be used. Pretreating of the electrode 3 is effected in, e.g., a 1 % common salt solution for a time of 20 minutes to 2 hours. After assembly the small amount of hydrogen evolved is absorbed by powdered pyrolusite 8 kept in position around electrode 3 by blotting paper 9. The electrode 4 is insulated from the pyrolusite by a lacquer, rubber.or other coating 10. The electrode 4 co-operates in known manner with an antimony electrode 6, separated therefrom by a semi-permeable membrane 7, to frequency modulate a transmitter 2 according to pH values being measured. |
