A bracket 10, acting with a clip to retain a rail 24 to a sleeper 14, has at least one limb 28 embedded in the sleeper, a projecting portion 32 forming a recess 34 in conjunction with the upper surface of the sleeper to receive one limb of the rail clip and a shoulder 36 to support another limb of the clip. The bracket may have a second limb 26 embedded in a stressed concrete sleeper and two brackets may be joined integrally by a section 29. The bracket is shaped from flat metal and may be protected from corrosion.
