The switching device is installed in the housing of the gas discharge lamp and is responsive to detected daylight for controlling the switching of the lamp and not to the light provided by the lamp itself. The switching threshold of the automatic switching device may be selected manually, the on-off switching provided by a bistable switching stage controlled by the detected light level.
