In a maintenance-free open industrial-type alkaline storage battery with a valve operating at below 1 bar relative pressure and with a total capacity of the negative electrodes greater than that of the positive electrodes, a gas permeable separator is located between the negative and positive electrodes and the battery contains an oxygen recombination device so that, after one or more charge/discharge cycles, the battery operates without electrolyte loss at a charging regime of at least Ic/10, Ic being the regime allowing battery capacity discharge in 1 hr.
