A reactor, shown in vertical cross-section in Fig. 1, comprises a cylindrical core 2 traversed by horizontal fuel tubes 3 and is controlled by neutron absorbing fluid disposed at discrete positions 9 within hollow vertical rods 8 traversing the core. The arrangement of three rods 8, shown, occurs at three spaced intervals along the length of the core to provide a total of nine rods (Fig. 2, not shown), the central rod of each group containing three positions 9 and the outer rods containing two positions. In an embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) each position 9 is filled with a neutron absorbing liquid comprising boric anhydride and D 2 O, the level of the liquid being controlled to vary the reactivity. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the reactivity is varied by adjusting the relative proportions of the boric anhydride and D 2 O. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) the positions 9 are filled with helium<SP>3</SP> gas, the gas pressure being varied to vary the reactivity. An automatic control may be provided (Fig. 6, not shown) by using signals from flux detectors mounted in the core adjacent the rods 8, these signals controlling valves which determine either the liquid level, the liquid concentration, or the gas pressure.</p>
