[Also in Division D1] As shown in the drawing twisted strands of fibrillous structure are made from polyalkylene fibres which have been molecularly oriented in the longitudinal direction and thereby rendered readily splittable or fibrillatable in this direction by drawing the film 12 in the longitudinal direction by feed rollers 11 from a supply reel 10 and fed into the inlet end 14 of a tube or flyer 13 the inlet and outlet ends 14 and 15 of which are straight and parallel to one another. The flyer 13 is mounted in a support 20 for rotational drive around the axis of the inlet end 14. A take-up reel 16 is mounted coaxially with the inlet end 14 of the flyer 13 on a rotating shaft 18 mounted in a support 17 which is reciprocated in a direction parallel to the axis of the take-up reel 16 which is thereby traversed with respect to the outlet end 15 of the flyer 13. The speed of the take-up reel 16 is adjusted so that the tension applied to the film is at least 5 kg. per square mm. and preferably at least 10 kg. per square mm. The curved tube flyer 13 may be substituted by a rotating disc provided with an eccentrically situated passage opening for the strand. Alternatively the tube 13 may be substituted by two eye guides connected to each other by a rod and corresponding with the two straight portions of the tube. The longitudinal stretching and the twisting and fibrillation of the film may be combined in a continuous operation, the draw rolls of the stretching zone functioning as the feed rolls of the twisting zone. The film may consist of a crystalline polypropylene or a low-pressure polyethylene.
