摘要 |
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a glass preform supporting rod which has the strength to withstand a weight increase accompanying an increase in the size of the apparatus and the corrosion resistance to allow the long-term use in a corrosive environment, such as HCl generated at the time of synthesizing a porous preform and is light in weight and good in workability. SOLUTION: This supporting rod is clamped at one end to a chuck 1 having rotating and traversing mechanisms and engages and supports a starting rod 4 for forming the glass preform at the other end at the time of producing the glass preform for an optical fiber by synthesizing a glass particulate deposit 8 by a vapor phase synthesis method and subjecting the deposit to a heat treatment. The supporting rod comprises a heat resistant and corrosion resistant coating formed by applying a heat resistant and corrosion resistant coating material on the surface of a heat resistant and corrosion resistant metallic material or metallic base material. |
