A door latch comprises a rotatable latch bolt 12 adapted to be fixed to a door to project at right angles from the end wall thereof, a keeper 10 adapted to be fixed to an upright of the door frame, and a spring loaded check lever 16 adapted to pivot about an axis at right angles to the casing of the upright of the door frame, the lever preventing the latch bolt, which when the door is latched bears against one of two bearing surfaces 65, 66 on the lever, from moving so as to release the door, the door thereby being held in a safety latched position II or a fully latched position III, and the bearing surfaces in the said positions being cut by a line joining the axes of rotation of the bolt 12 and lever 16 or an extension of such line. In the embodiment shown the lever 16 is pivotally mounted in a slot in the block 10 and projects into a recess 15 in the block which receives the bolt 12. Pivoting of the lever is limited by a pin and slot connection 19, 20 and notches 26, 27 in the lever receive the bolt 12 in the latching positions and include the bearing surfaces 65, 66. The bolt 12 is semi-circular in cross-section and is released from the notches by rotation. The bearing surfaces 65, 66 conform in shape to the rounded portion of the bolt. A spring loaded clamping wedge 42 on the block 10, which is pressure cast, engages the edge 34 of a plate on the door. In a second embodiment the block 10 comprises two embossed casing halves, one of which has a slot for receiving the bolt 12, and a single spring loads the lever 16 and the clamping wedge 42. In this embodiment a projection on the lever 16 engages a stop integral with one of the casing halves to limit pivotal movement. In a further embodiment the lever 16 is pivoted beyond the latched position of the bolt 12 and has two teeth which define bearing surfaces and hook the bolt in the safety latched or fully latched positions.
