Pelletized iron ores, particularly taconite ore beneficiated by magnetic separation, are reduced with a gaseous mixture of CO and H2 in a reduction zone of a shaft furnace whereby CO2 and H2O are produced in the gaseous mixture which is regenerated by withdrawing the top gases and cooling them to abstract water while allowing CO2 to remain, enriching them with CH4, passing the enriched gases through a heating zone, e.g. selectively through a plurality of stoves, at 2000-3000 DEG F. to produce CO and H2, moderating the temperature of the gases to between 1300 and 1800 DEG F. e.g. by mixing therewith a portion of cooled top gases and returning the gases to the reduction zone. The reduced pellets are preferably passed from the reduction zone into an adjacent cooling zone into which cooled top gases are introduced together with a portion of CH4.
|
