Saturated unbranched hydrocarbons containing from 5 to 8 carbon atoms per molecule are converted to the corresponding alcohols of the same number of carbon atoms by contacting the hydrocarbons in the liquid phase with a gas containing molecular oxygen, in the presence of a boron compound and subsequently hydrolysing the reaction product, the conversion being conducted in the presence of from 10 to 20,000 parts by weight of saturated branched hydrocarbon per million parts by weight of the saturated unbranched hydrocarbon subjected to the conversion. In addition to the branched hydrocarbon, 2 to 20,000 parts per million of an aromatic hydrocarbon may also be present. In the examples cyclic branched hydrocarbons, e.g. methylcyclopentane and methylcyclohexane are used. Cyclohexanone is a further oxidation product in the oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol. |
