OPTICAL PULSE GENERATING METHOD AND EQUIPMENT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate large optical pulses whose width is small, by installing a Mach-Zehnder type intensity modulator and an electric field absorption type modulator which connect mutually in series a laser light from a single axial mode laser and synchronously operate. SOLUTION: A stationary laser light I0 emitted from a laser 11 is guided to a modulator 13 through an optical fiber 12. An output light I1 of a Mach- Zehnder type intensity modulator 13 which receives the stationary laser light I0 as an input light is guided to an electric field absorption type modulator 15, as an input light. When a sinewave signal 17 is applied to the modulator 13, it outputs the sinewave light I1 which is modulated synchronously with the signal 17. Thereby the stationary light I0 whose intensity is higher than that of the modulator 15 can be adopted as an input light of the modulator 13, so that the output of a sinewave light I1 which does not suffer from heavy attenuation is enabled.
