In a neutron generator, a proton beam impinges on a liquid lead-bismuth alloy target. The alloy flows down a vertical tube at a controlled speed such that a free surface, the target, is maintained within the tube. A vacuum is maintained above the surface and the proton beam is incident vertically downwards on the target. A heavy water moderator surrounds the target tube and is provided with experimental neutron beam apertures. The alloy flows through a heat exchanger prior to entry into the tube and the target level is adjusted by nitrogen gas pressure applied to the alloy circuit.</p> |
