An aortic cannula (16) is proved for use in a single insertion maneuver to start an opening in a wall (15) of an aorta (13). The aortic cannula (16) includes a sleeve (22), a cutter (26) configured for movement through the distal end (23) of the sleeve (22) to form the initial opening in the aorta (13), and a dilator (20) positioned within the sleeve (22). The dilator (20) includes a conically-shaped portion (28) for enlarging the initial opening so that the sleeve (22) may extend through the enlarged opening. |
