PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a magnetic recording medium of a simultaneous double coating system having a highly smooth surface, by uniformly dispersing magnetic powder and a polishing agent therein and to provide a magnetic recording medium having the reliability of electromagnetic transduction characteristics adequate for high-density recording and durability, etc. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is constituted by forming an intermediate layer 2 contg. nonmagnetic powder on a nonmagnetic base 1 and a magnetic layer 3 contg. the magnetic powder and the polishing agent on the upper layer thereof. In such a case, the relation between the average grain size (d) of the polishing agent incorporated into the magnetic layer 3 and the layer thickness (u) of the magnetic layer 3 is so set as to satisfy the conditions u<=d<=(u+0.1μm). The process for producing the magnetic recording medium includes a stage for manufacturing the coating material of the magnetic layer and a stage for manufacturing the coating material of the polishing agent prepd. by dispersing the polishing agent into a binder and adding the material to the coating material of the magnetic layer, thereby uniformly dispersing the magnetic power and the polishing agent into the coating material of the magnetic layer.
