The position detecting method involves monitoring the interactions of transceiver chips (4) attached to the legs of the players (3) by adhesive tape, with an array of position markers (2) implanted into the ground of the sports arena. The markers include a coil generating a magnetic field of variable intensity. The transceiver chips include an antenna, and weigh no more than 30 g. The transceiver is activated by the magnetic field of the nearest markers. The ball position is determined by numerical reconstruction of its trajectory based on the positions of the players that come in contact with it.
