A fluid distribution system, e.g. for supplying connected houses such as town houses with heated fluid e.g. steam, comprises at least one unit consisting of a main conduit 11 and a branch conduit 12 connected to the main conduit 11 by a third conduit 17 joined at one end 18 to the main conduit and having its other end fixed to the branch pipe 12 at a point 15 spaced lengthwise of the main conduit from said one end 18 the third conduit 17 being of smaller diameter and more flexible than the main conduit 11 and being curved between its ends to define portions extending generally laterally of the main conduit whereby it can stretch, or compress, to accommodate relative lengthwise movement between its ends. As shown steam supply and return conduits 11, 13 are accommodated in an outer casing 10 adapted to be buried in the ground, the conduits 11, 13 being formed in sections which are joined together, e.g. by welding, and the gaps between casing sections at the junctions being closed by rings 14. The branch pipes 12 are also adapted to be buried in the ground movement between the points 15, 18, due to expansion and contraction of the main pipes 11, 13, being accommodated by the flexible third pipes 17 which are helically wound around the respective pipes 11, 13 at locations which have no insulation cover 16. In an alternative arrangement the third pipes 17 are wound around insulation covers 16 provided with a thin metal covering, or lagging.</p> |
