I-R-transparent glass is melted from a mix consisting, in wt. % of: (a) 63-98 of at least two of the following, the maximum of each being indicated: WO 3 , 46; MoO, 60; Bi 2 O 3 , 50; Sb 2 O 3 , 25; or As 2 O 3 , 30; (b) 2-37 of one or more oxides or fluorides of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, or Pb; and (c) 0-15 of one or more of the following whose maximum is indicated: ZrO 2 , 3; ThO 2 , 3; Te 2 O 3 , 10; Ta 2 O 5 and/or Nb 2 O 5 , 5. The glasses are brown. The above components are mixed, with or without halogen-containing organic substances, and melted.
