The carrier (18) is hinged, to the exterior of the rear hatch (12) by hinges (26), with provision for folding to vertical stowage or horizontal working positions. The rear hatch has a fitting (50,74) which is located near the hinge and which faces the support surface (72,88) of the stud (64) on the vehicle body structure, when the hatch door is in the shut position and when the load carrier is in the service position. The hinges are built into the door, with a slot (58) which registers with the stud (62), built into the door aperture framework, when the door is closed. When the carrier is loaded, the downward leverage on the carrier produces an upward force of the slot against the lower surface (72) of the head (68) of the stud, and twisting of the door frame is prevented because the stud takes up the load.
