The invention relates to a process for producing nitrogen containing organic fertilizer in liquid form. In the process, ammonia-containing air which is formed in conjunction with composting nitrogen-containing organic material is conducted into a gas scrubber, or another device which is suitable for the purpose, which is in contact with an organic acid-containing washing solution, and the ammonium salt which is thus obtained is used as the raw material for fertilizer, either as such or having been diluted.
