The invention is related to a synchronization method in a telecommunications network comprising several nodes (A...D) which have been interconnected by using transmission links. Network nodes transmit synchronization messages which are used to state the quality level of the corresponding signal as regards synchronization. A priority list is formed in each node, the list containing node interfaces on different priority levels. The node uses as its synchronization source the one signal, from among the possible synchronization sources, which has the highest quality level. In order for the synchronization to utilize the backup clocks more efficiently, information is stored to the node for an individual priority level of an individual interface, the information stating the quality level that the signal coming from the interface in question must have in order for the interface in question to be on the priority level in question, and the node searches for the highest quality level that the signals received in the node have, and selects from the interfaces receiving signals of that quality level the one which has the highest priority on the quality level in question and uses that as its synchronization source.
