PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the utilization efficiency of light with simple constitution and to realize aimed color expression by providing a 2nd polarizing means between a liquid crystal function element means and a liquid crystal panel and irradiating the liquid crystal panel only with a light component in a polarization direction orthogonal to the polarization direction of a 1st polarizing means. SOLUTION: By impressing driving voltage, the liquid crystal function element means 3 generates parallel fringes constituted by the difference of refractive index. The light made incident on the means 3 is diffracted to irradiate the liquid crystal panel 1 by receiving the parallel fringes, so that color display is realized. By applying constitution that the 1st polarizing means 2 has the polarization direction to be parallel or orthogonal to the parallel fringes generated by the means 3, the polarization direction of zero-order light shows the same direction as that of the 1st polarizing means 2 and the polarization direction of 1st-order diffracted light shows the direction orthogonal thereto. Thus, the zero-order light is cut by the 2nd polarizing means 5 having the polarization direction orthogonal to that of the 1st polarizing means 2 and the aimed color expression is realized. |
