PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnesium hydroxide flame retardant which is relatively low in cost, is excellent in water resistance, dispersibility, and flame retardance, and gives a compsn. excellent in mechanical strengths and electrical insulating properties. SOLUTION: This flame retardant is coated particles which are prepd. by treating natural brucite particles with at least one surface-treating agent selected from the group consisting of silane coupling agents and silanes by a mechanochemical surface-treating method, in which a coating layer comprising the surface treating agent is chemically bonded to the surface of each natural brucite particle, and which have an average particle size of 1-10μm. The flame- retardant resin compsn. contains the flame retardant.
