1,156,092. Lawn mowers. YARD-MAN Inc. 2 Aug., 1966 [3 Sept., 1965], No 34657/66. Heading A1F. A self propelled rotary lawn mower has a frame 10 supported on ground wheels 28, 30. The wheels 28 have internal teeth in mesh with pinions 46 keyed to a drive shaft 42 on which is keyed a disc 52 having a driving surface 54 which rotates by virtue of its frictional contact with a wheel 74 driven by belt 108 from an extension 106 on the cam shaft of engine 24. The wheel 74 is mounted on an arm 56 pivoted on the frame 10 at 58 and is biased towards the surface 54 by a spring 100. The vertical position of wheel 74 can be altered by a knob 88 in order to change the speed of shaft 42 and hence of the ground wheels 54. The wheel 74 can also be disengaged from the disc 52 by lowering the handle 32 pivoted at 34 and connected at 38 to the extension 118 of arm 56, through the cable 120. The mower blade can be disengaged from the engine by pressing a foot lever 194 connected to friction-blocks 222 which slide over the blade-carrying support 166 and force the surface 172 of support 166 up to disengage the support 166 from a clutch ring 156 rigid with the rotating engine-crankshaft. In an embodiment the wheel 74 is mounted on a rigid support so that the speed of the ground wheels is not adjustable.
