In-use recognition device for front passenger seat in motor vehicle

The device recognizes one or more uses of a front passenger seat, in which an airbag is not to be activated. It has a manually activated switch (CS) with various switch positions (1-3). Each of these is associated with one method of use, in which the airbag is not to be activated. A control unit (ECU) deactivates the airbag, when the switch in one of the positions. The device also has elements (IM) to prevent driving of the vehicle after starting, if the switch has not been operated. The passenger door may have a door switch (TS), and the elements (IM) prevent driving, when after opening of the door detected by the door switch, the in-use recognition switch has not been used.
