The device uses a laser welder and has a one-piece or multi-piece central lug able to be inserted into the welding seam lying in the longitudinal gap direction. Each one-piece or multi-piece lug (2) is located movably so that it marks the welding seam in one end position and lies outside the range of the laser beam in the other end position. Each lug can slide and the axis of its movement is located below a certain angle that is greater than zero to the axis of the laser beam. The location of the lugs is either above or below the plate to be welded.
