CETP activity inhitors containing as the active ingredient compounds represented by general formula (I), prodrug compounds thereof, pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, or hydrates or solvates of these, (wherein R represents linear or branched alkyl, linear or branched alkenyl, lower haloalkyl, optionally substitued cycloalkyl, optionally substituted cycloalkenyl, optionally substituted cycloalkylalkyl, optionally substitued aryl or optionally substituted heterocycle; X1, X2, X3 and X4 may be the same or different from each other and each represents hydrogen, halogeno, lower alkyl, lower haloalkyl, lower alkoxy, cyano, nitro, acyl or aryl; Y represents -CO- or -SO2-; and Z represents hydrogen or a mercapto-protective group). The compounds represented by general formula (I) are expected to be useful as preventives or remedies of a novel type for arteriosclerosis or hyperlipemia, since they can selectively inhibit the CETP activity to thereby increase HDL and, at the same time, decrease LDL.
