Reproduction system comprises a host device (2) (computer) and a reproduction device (1) (DVD drive) for copying a recording medium (DVD-disk). The host (1) comprises a reproduction device for reading data from the recording medium and a control device for causing the reproduction device (1) to read control information about defects registered in the recording media and reading positioning information for the data on the disks. The reproduction device (1) has a means for reading data about defect areas from the recording medium when instructed by the host device (2), said data being held by the host in memory where it is used to translate data addresses on the recording medium to new addresses should the required data have been expected to be contained in a defect area.
