An apparatus and method for transmitting a signal having a first bandwidth through a telephone line having a second bandwidth, wherein the first bandwidth includes frequencies outside the second bandwidth is disclosed. The invention also provides a method and apparatus for demodulating the transmitted signal. The system also includes a mobile unit coupled to an electronic stethoscope (12A) that communicates with a base unit (22A) using a wireless communication link. In combination with the method and apparatus for transmitting signal through a conventional telephone line, the invention allows data representative of heart and lung sounds from an electronic stethoscope that is outside the passband of a conventional telephone line to be transmitted through the telephone system (34) for remote diagnosis and analysis.
