A shredding apparatus is provided for shredding organic materials into mulch. The apparatus includes a housing having a motor drive cutter assembly therein, an open end, an aperture for organic materials to be fed into the housing and a gate opening for shredded materials to flow out of the housing. A base member is adjustably attached to the open end of the housing. The base member has a wall section extending into the gate opening during operation. The extent in which the wall section is in the gate opening varies with the attachment position of the base member. In this manner the grade of mulch can be selected by varying the area of the gate opening available for the shredded materials to flow out of the housing. The base member includes a plurality of profiled vents through which air enters the housing. The air assists movement of the shredded materials in the housing.
