Prodn. of optically active alpha -(hydroxyphenoxy)-alkanoic acids (I) comprises (a) hydrolysing an alcohol soln. of an optically active alkyl alpha -halo-alkanoate ester (II) with an aq. alkali metal hydroxide soln. to give a soln. of an optically active alkali metal alpha -halo-alkanoate salt, and (b) treating the soln. with a dihydroxybenzene (III), opt. in alkali metal salt form, in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide and an alcohol solvent. |
