A fast wide angle zoom lens system for a compact camera is disclosed which comprises, from an object side, a first lens group of a negative refractive power; a second lens group of a positive refractive power; and a third lens group of a negative refractive power. When zooming is carried out from a wide angle position to a telephoto position in this system, the first, second and third lens groups are all shifted toward the object so that a distance between the first and second lens group and a distance between the second and third lens group are varied with the zoom lens system satisfying the following conditions: 2<|f1|/fW<20 0.30<S1/fW<0.70, where f1 is a focal length of the first lens group; S1 is an amount of shift of the first lens group during zooming; and fW is an focal length of the overall zoom lens at the wide angle position.
