A process for preparing an alkaline earth metal hydroxide which comprises reacting particulate alkaline earth metal oxide having a particle size in the range from about 100 mu m to about 10,000 mu m with a sufficient quantity of water for a sufficient time and at a sufficient temperature to carry out said reaction effectively whereby said alkaline earth metal hydroxide is prepared.
