The apparatus carries a plurality of gas cylinders (a) held in upright disposition on a turntable (d). Each cylinder (a) is fed onto the turntable (d) at feed-on location, and is fed off at a feed-off location, whilst a detecting head (5) moves downwards to locate the filling valve (a') at the top of the cylinder. If it is angularly misaligned with a radially disposed filling nozzle (7'), the nozzle is rotated around the cylinder (a) until alignment is achieved when the nozzle is engaged and filling takes place.
