An information recording medium comprising a stack of layers (3-21) includes a recording layer (15) interposed between two shielding layers (17,19), the shielding layers (17,19) being opaque to radiation within a predetermined waveband. The recording layer (15) is adjacent to at least one layer (9;7;3) which is transparent to radiation within the predetermined waveband. The recording layer is readable by radiation within the predetermined waveband passing into said one layer (9;7;3) through a free edge of the layer (9;7;3).
