Porous inorganic material and process for producing the same

A porous inorganic material comprising needle-like crystals of 2Al2O3.B2O3 having a diameter of 10 mu m or smaller; a porous inorganic material comprising needle-like crystals of 2Al2O3.B2O3 having a diameter of 10 mu m or smaller and needle-like crystals of 9Al2O3.2B2O3 having a diameter of 10 mu m or smaller; and a porous inorganic material comprising needle-like crystals of 9Al2O3.2B2O3 having a diameter of 10 mu m or smaller and an aspect ratio lower than 10. These porous inorganic materials are characterized in that the needle-like crystals are distributed uniformly and randomly and mutually bonded at at least one site with respect to each crystal, and the mutual bonding of the needle-like crystals is established by the sharing of one or more needle-like-crystal constituents without the aid of a binder. These porous inorganic materials enable the excellent properties of the needle-like crystals to be easily utilized in the highest degree or have the same excellent properties as the porous inorganic material comprising needle-like crystals. <IMAGE>
