In a modulation and demodulation system for exchanging data between a terminal unit (e.g a PC) and a communication network, when the terminal unit is not connected, in response to data reception from the communication network, the reception data is temporarily stored in a memory (step 55). When the terminal unit is connected, the data is read out from the memory to transfer to the terminal unit (step 58). Thus loss of data is prevented. On the other hand, upon storage of the reception data to the memory, by storing the data with compression, reduction of the memory capacity becomes possible. The compression method uses a common dictionary for characters or character strings. |
