PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for readily producing perylene-3,4-dicarboxylic anhydride useful for a coloring agent, etc., without using a transition metal catalyst in a high yield by treating a specific dicarboximide compound with a base, alkylating the treated dicarboximide compound, further treating the alkylated compound with a base and thereafter acidifying the treated compound. SOLUTION: The objective compound of formula II is obtained by treating (A) a compound of formula I [R<1> to R<4> are each H a halogen, a 1-20C alkyl, a 1-20C alkoxy, a phenyl (oxy) (substituted with a halogen, etc.) with (B) a base such as a 1-4C alcoholate or hydroxide of an alkali(ne earth) metal to provide an anion, reacting the anion with (C) an alkylating agent of a compound of the formula R<7> -X [X is a halogen; R<7> is a 1-20C alkyl (substituted with phenyl)] to provide an alkylated carboximide corresponding thereto, treating the alkylated carboximide with (D) the base such as an alkali(ne earth) metal hydroxide in a 1-8C alcohol, and thereafter acidifying the reaction product. |
