[Also in Division B8] Cans C are conveyed in multi pocketed carriers affixed to an endless chain through a sterilizing apparatus comprising a treatment chamber 38 which includes an inlet or pre-heating leg 40, a sterilizing leg 42, and a discharge or cooling leg 44. The chamber 38 is filled with water through a conduit 45 and the water in the sterilizing leg 42 is heated by steam which enters through a manifold 46. A pump P is connected 'to opposite ends of the leg 42 to circulate the water in the leg in the opposite direction to the direction of movement of the carriers. Steam and cold water respectively are added to the inlet and outlet legs 40, 44 to maintain the desired temperature gradient therein commiserate with the ambient temperature and the sterilizing temperature.
