A top sharpenable saw chain cutter link 30 comprises a body 43, a top plate 86 having a forward face 102, a rear face 112 and an outer forward edge surface 100 defining a cutting edge 92 with the forward face, and shank means 82 joining the top plate with the body portion in a position in which the top plate slopes rearwardly and inwardly from the outer, forward edge surface, the top plate being of a metal having a predetermined hardness, the forward face having a hardness substantially greater than said predetermined hardness, and the rear face being of said predetermined hardness. The top plate extends from a side plate 84 having a side surface 110 and a side surface 104 which with a front face 98 and an upper face 92 forms side and upper cutting edges 94, 90. The forward surface 102 of the top plate and the side surfaces 104, 110 are hardened by chromium plating or carburising. When the cutting edges are sharpened either by grinding as the link runs over the drive sprocket of a chain saw or by filing, only the front face 98 and the upper face 100 are engaged so that the file is not worn out by engagement with the hardened faces. The cutting link also includes a depth gauge 40 having an upper edge 62 which can also be reduced when the link is sharpened so that it extends from a line 56 normal to the line 46 joining the rivet holes 42 of the link a slightly less distance than does the cutting edge 90. The depth gauge is slightly offset from the plane of the body of the link but is not in the same plane as the side plate 84. A guide for use when sharpening the link can be fitted on the guide bar of the chain saw. The guide has a member 190, Fig. 4, for engaging the edge 160 of the body 43 of the link and two openings 194, 196 through which the tooth and depth gauge ex - tend for engagement by a file guided by 198, 200. The cutter links are arranged in allochiral relationship in a chain, each cutter link being opposite a side link 34 and being pivotally connected to centre drive links 32. The drive links 32 are pivoted at their other ends to guard links 36 and further side links 34. The guard links have upper edges 68 which prevent brush from catching under the forward edges 66 of the depth gauges.
