The sensor (11-14) measures the distance to the rotor (5). The rotor location relative to the stator both radially and axially comprises a magnetic bearing. The rotor floats freely without mechanical contact with the stator and the sensor (11-14) measures the distance to the rotor in two separate measurement directions (X). The two measurement directions are at right-angles to one another and at least one of them is at right-angles to the rotor rotation axis (4). At least one sensor has at least two constituents, which are arranged to measure the distance in the same direction to parts of the rotor located at a distance from one another. The device comprises a first gyro/accelerometer in the measurement direction. The sensor can measure the distance to the rotor in two directions at right-angles to one another, of which one coincides with the rotor rotation axis (4).
