Raney metallic fixed bed catalyst, process for preparing the same and process for hydrogenating polymers using this catalyst

Activated metal powder free macroporous metal fixed bed Raney catalyst comprises an alloy of Al and a group VIII metal and has a macroporous content of more than 80 vol.%. Also claimed are: (i) the preparation of the catalyst by forming a mastic mass containing the alloy, a deformation medium, water and a pore builder comprising a water-miscible polymer of mol. wt. 6000-500,000, moulding, calcining and treating with an alkali metal hydroxide; (ii) preliminary materials used for a catalyst as above; and (iii) the hydrogenation of polymers using the above catalyst. Preferably the polymer contains a groups(s) from carbon-carbon double and triple bonds, C-N double and triple bonds, nitro and aromatic groups and/or halogen atoms, preferably at least one C-N triple bond.
