The water softener comprises a resin pot (7) connected to a salt pot (8) and a water reservoir (9) which is connected on one side to a water supply and on the other to the salt pot by an injection pump (10). The water softener is located in the lower part of the machine housing, in the space normally occupied by sound insulation and has a non-return element in the form of an air-break (5) situated above the maximum water level (1A). The resins in the resin pot are situated between lower and upper mesh grilles (11, 12) with partitions (15) between them.
