PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing surfactant powder high in solubility even in an aqueous alkaline solution, and to obtain a granular detergent composition capable of fully exhibiting the detergent performance of the surfactant powder. SOLUTION: First, a mixed slurry containing anα-sulfofatty acid alkyl ester salt, soap and water-soluble polycarboxylic acid and/or its salt is prepared, and then concentrated to a water content of <=15wt.%. Subsequently, the resulting concentrate is cooled to <=70 deg.C and then made into powder to obtain the objective surfactant powder comprising >=40wt.% of theα-sulfofatty acrid alkyl ester salt, >=10wt.% of the soap and 0.01-5wt.% of the water-soluble polycarboxylic acid and/or its salt based on the total amount of the above two ingredients. The granular detergent composition is obtained by incorporating the above surfactant powder.
